Why altBeing Exists

There are some business ideas that begin with a spreadsheet. 🌜🌛 And then there are the ones that begin with two people sitting around talking about life, work, purpose, frustration, possibility—and eventually saying, “Wait a minute… why doesn’t this already exist?” altBeing was definitely the second kind. I didn’t set out to build a spiritual wellness platform. Honestly, I had already spent enough of my life building things. For nearly three decades, I worked in education, organizational leadership and I was an artist. I was able to flex my creative prowess as an artist in New York City. After thousands of bowls of Ramen, I decided I wanted to be Bezos rich. So, I decided to pursue a career in education. For twenty years I was a teacher, a school principal, and a leader responsible for people, budgets, programs, and outcomes. Then I took a leap. For the last six years I took an entrepreneurial path to serving people -- damn it's been a ride! Over my career, I learned how organizations work, how they sometimes don't work, and how much energy it takes to move an idea from “Wouldn’t it be great if…” to "Let's build it...“ to "Okay, who is going to actually do it?” I learned to lead through growth, change, tight budgets, big expectations, and the occasional fire drill—sometimes literally. 🕯️💓 But somewhere along the way, I also became fascinated by something that didn't always fit neatly into the world of traditional institutions: people's desire to understand themselves. People want more than a job. More than a diagnosis. More than a transaction. More than another app telling them what they should buy. They want meaning. They want connection. They want to feel better in their bodies and minds. They want to explore spirituality. They want to learn from people who have walked different paths. They want to discover practices that make them feel more grounded, more curious, more alive. And increasingly, there are practitioners, teachers, healers, coaches, artists, readers, bodyworkers, guides, and wellness entrepreneurs who are dedicating their lives to helping people do exactly that. But there was a problem. Actually, there were about seventeen problems. And then there was Alanna. Alanna and I came at this world from very different directions. She is a fifth-generation Root worker, energy reader, and healer. She was born in the United States, raised in Ireland, spent a decade in London as a professional Muay Thai fighter, moved to Los Angeles, led women's self-development workshops, and eventually moved her work online during COVID. Her journey wasn't exactly the traditional career ladder. Mine wasn't either. And maybe that's why we understood each other. Alanna had firsthand experience with what it was like to build a practice around something deeply meaningful while simultaneously trying to figure out how to make that practice financially sustainable. There is a funny little contradiction in the wellness world: We're constantly telling people to know their worth while practitioners are often struggling to charge theirs. There is a tremendous amount of heart in this work. There is also a tremendous amount of hustle. 👷♀️⛑️ A practitioner can be a healer on Monday, social media manager on Tuesday, website designer on Wednesday, photographer on Thursday, accountant on Friday, customer-service representative over the weekend—and somehow still be expected to meditate. Then comes the technology. Instagram. Facebook. TikTok. Calendars. Email platforms. Course platforms. Payment processors. Websites. Online communities. Event platforms. Booking systems. And twelve passwords you absolutely, positively should remember. At some point, we started asking a simple question: What if practitioners didn't have to be everything, everywhere, all at once? That question became the beginning of altBeing. We didn't want to build just another marketplace. There are plenty of places where someone can buy a product. There are plenty of places where someone can book a service. There are plenty of places where someone can take a course. There are plenty of places where someone can join a community. ❤️🩹💔 But the world we were seeing was fragmented. The practitioner was over here. The course was over there. The community was somewhere else. The event was on another website. The book was on another platform. The customer was trying to put the pieces together. And the practitioner was trying to keep up with all of it. We thought there had to be another way. So we started building a place where those pieces could actually belong together. A place where someone could discover a practitioner, learn from them, connect with a community, participate in experiences, and ultimately grow. And just as importantly, a place where a practitioner could do more than simply list a service. They could tell their story. Share what they know. Build a community. Teach a course. Host an event. Offer a reading. Sell a product. Create a class. Meet people w
